Tomatoes: Fruit or Vegetable?

“Does a tomato count as a fruit or as a vegetable”?

This is one of the top questions asked by kids and teens in the Healthy Lifestyles Program. Apparently there is an ongoing debate surrounding this mystery!

According to botanists (scientists who study plants), tomatoes are considered to be a fruit, but in the nutrition world, tomatoes count as a vegetable… specifically a lower-carb veggie. Unlike our favorite sugary sweet fruits, tomatoes are WAY lower in sugar so they are more aligned in the veggie category.

Not only are tomatoes delicious but they are PACKED with nutrients such as immunity - boosting vitamin C, as well as potassium which helps to lower blood pressure. In addition, the red pigment in tomatoes (called lycopene) fights inflammation in our body.

Whether you slice them for sandwiches, chop them for salads, cook them down for sauces or simply bite into a whole vine- ripened tomato … ENJOY this versatile fruit… or rather vegetable!

Here is a simple salsa recipe to try from Chop Chop cooking magazine:
