Packing a Fun Lunch for School

Many kids have already returned to school and others will be starting in the next week.  This is a good time to think about... LUNCH.

 

Some kids pack their lunch every day for school while others do a combination of school lunch and packed lunch.   One very real benefit to eating a packed lunch is that your child will have more time to eat it! Many kids complain of having to rush through lunch by the time they go through the line. 

 

When packing your child's lunch, try to aim for good overall balance.  Here are the basics to include:

  • A good protein source

  • Some veggies

  • A high quality grain (optional)

  • Healthy fats

  • Fruit for dessert

  • Water (or a plain milk or soy milk box)

And don't forget to keep it COLD by adding a reusable freezer ice pack!


Try these  balanced, fun lunches with your child:

  • Container of chicken salad or tuna salad 

  • Raw veggies (sliced radishes, celery, cucumbers, carrots, etc.). Include a dip or humus if desired.

  • A few whole grain crackers 

  • A handful of grapes

  • Water to drink

 

~ OR ~

 

  • One to two ounces of sliced or cubed cheddar cheese

  • Container of seasoned black beans 

  • Small container of salsa

  • Around 12 or 14 blue corn tortilla chips

  • Half of an avocado (don't forget to include a spoon for scooping!!)

  • Apple

  • Water to drink

 

~ OR ~

 

 

  • Chef salad: top a salad with one or more proteins (sunflower seed kernels,  sliced turkey or ham,  chopped egg, garbanzo beans, etc.) and a bit of your child's favorite dressing (NOT fat free!)

  • A few whole grain crackers

  • 2 small cutie clementines

  • Water to drink
