Granola bars, protein bars, cereal bars... there are SO many on the grocery store shelves! How do we know if the one we select is a good choice or simply a heavily processed, sugary treat?
Here are a few tips to help you decide:
Most granola bars and fruit / cereal bars are quite sugary so they are considered to be a "treat". It's OK to occasionally have a treat, but it's best not to snack on things that are sugary. Look for bars that have 7 grams or LESS of sugar per serving.
Some bars DO contain a significant amount of protein. Choose one that has around 10 grams of protein (and of course 7 grams or LESS of sugar).
A good way to bump up the protein content of a granola bar is to spread it with a delicious layer of peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower seed butter. The nut or seed butter also adds heart healthy fats as well!
Some bars are poor sources of dietary fiber. Try to find one that packs a MINIMUM of 3 grams of fiber per serving.
